Overview

Spectralytics provides laser processing solutions to our customers worldwide. Our laser solutions can make the smallest parts with critical tolerances. We work with plastic, metal, composites and more. We also prototype and have the ability to support your product with a custom laser solution.

Whatever you call it, micro-hole drilling, micromachining, precision laser drilling, medical device manufacturing, stent cutting, laser welding or laser micro-hole drilling, Spectralytics does it all. Laser ablation, skiving, marking, wire stripping, are all part of our vocabulary. From precision stent machining to the drilling of close tolerance holes required for catheters and embolic protection devices — and that’s just the beginning of our capabilities.

History

In a store-front type building, in the Minneapolis suburb of Edina, Minnesota, inventor, engineer and CEO Gary Oberg started Spectralytics with two people and two lasers in 1990.

Although lasers have always been Spectralytics primary business, the products we’ve worked on have changed dramatically over the years. The very first process was to laser weld pressure sensors in a vacuum vessel for Honeywell. Acquiring a small CO2 laser shop led us to cutting sheet metal, wooden ornaments, bird houses – you name it.

In 1991, around the time the medical industry realized the potential of our technology, Gary started to attend the MDM tradeshows. Currently the medical industry accounts for 98% of our business.

In 1998, Gary bought the current 21,000 square foot facility in the Dassel, Minnesota. The initial move included tube-cutting tools, but by July, 2000 all the equipment was moved. The building formerly belonged to a company called Nortronics, and Gary hired some of the former employees.

In 2012 Spectralytics was purchased by Cretex, and became part of the Cretex Medical family. Cretex is a family of manufacturing companies offering contract manufacturing of medical devices, These companies share a common set of values, a common management system, and a pervasive focus on quality, customer service and responsiveness. We’ve been around for nearly 100 years.

Today, Spectralytics is ran by a management team that embraces Cretex’s historical values and has vast contract manufacturing experience. We strive to surpass the needs of our customers daily as Cretex has for a century.
